Palynofacies and calcareous nannofossils in the Upper Kimmeridgian, southeastern Paris basin (France)

2005

AbstractThe Upper Kimmeridgian Members “Calcaires blancs supérieurs” and the “Marnes à exogyres supérieures” of the southeastern Paris basin were investigated for their palynofacies and calcareous nannofossils. These members display alternating limestone-marl lithotypes and represent shallow marine palaeoenvironments. The lower carbonate member is interpreted as a proximal palaeoenvironment (palaeobathymetry = 5 to 10 m), where storm and swell deposits were prevalent and the salinity was occasionally weak. The relative richness of brown phytoclasts in this part is favoured by good preservation related to restricted conditions. These conditions would explain the dominance of the nannofoss…

Cabbage and fermented vegetables: from death rate heterogeneity in countries to candidates for mitigation strategies of severe COVID-19

2021

International audience; Large differences in COVID-19 death rates exist between countries and between regions of the same country. Some very low death rate countries such as Eastern Asia, Central Europe, or the Balkans have a common feature of eating large quantities of fermented foods. Although biases exist when examining ecological studies, fermented vegetables or cabbage have been associated with low death rates in European countries. SARS-CoV-2 binds to its receptor, the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). As a result of SARS-CoV-2 binding, ACE2 downregulation enhances the angiotensin II receptor type 1 (AT1 R) axis associated with oxidative stress. This leads to insulin resistance …

Uncommon clinical presentation of Kimura’s disease as bilateral retroauricular masses in a young Malian male: successful surgical approach.

2016

We present a case of a 27 year-old Malian male referred to our hospital for two large, painless retroauricolar masses that had appeared two years earlier. Bilateral cervical painless lymphadenopathy was present at physical examination, without any other systemic symptoms. His history was relevant for bilateral Kimura’s disease lesions resected 5 years earlier in the same locations. Lymphocytosis and a mild hypereosinophilia were found in routine blood tests, together with increased total IgE levels. After surgery, histology showed lymphoid infiltrates with reactive prominent germinal centres containing eosinophils, suggesting relapse of Kimura’s disease, in the context of nonencapsulated fi…

Un ripostiglio inedito dall’insediamento di Balate di Marianopoli (Caltanissetta)

2012

The subject of the contribution is a small hoard of 38 coins discovered during the excavations of 1986 in the anellenic center of Balate di Marianopoli (CL). The study examines the composition of the hoard, which also includes a rare specimen with the signature of the engraver Kimon, specifying the date of burial on the basis of the contextual material and proposing a historical interpretation

In situ analysis of garnet inclusion in diamond using single-crystal X-ray diffraction and X-ray micro-tomography

2012

A single crystal of garnet enclosed in a diamond from the Jericho kimberlite (Slave Craton, Canada) has been investigated using X-ray diffraction and X-ray micro-tomography. The novel experimental approach allowed us to determine the crystal structure of the garnet. The unit-cell edge a and fractional atomic coordinates of oxygen were used to determine the composition via an updated Margules model for garnets. The composition is Pyr(0.41(5))Alm(0.36(7))Gro(0.22(1))Uva(0.01(1)), which is indistinguishable from the eclogitic garnets found in other Jericho diamonds. We also demonstrated that residual pressures on the inclusion of up to 1 GPa do not affect significantly the determination of the…

Lactobacillus bobalius sp. nov., a lactic acid bacterium isolated from Spanish Bobal grape must

2008

A Lactobacillus strain, designated 203(T), previously isolated from Bobal grape must was characterized phylogenetically, genotypically and phenotypically in order to establish whether it represents a novel species. On the basis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence, strain 203(T) was shown to belong to the genus Lactobacillus, falling within the Lactobacillus alimentarius-Lactobacillus farciminis group and being closely related to the type strains of L. alimentarius, Lactobacillus kimchii and Lactobacillus paralimentarius. DNA-DNA hybridization results confirmed the separate status of strain 203(T) at the species level. To establish the similarities and differences between 203(T) and the three afor…

Tradition and Legitimation in North Korea

2017

Since its debut in 2012, the Moranbong Band has served as a key symbol for the Kim Jongun-era ruling style, limited cosmopolitanism, and ultimately political conservatism. This article analyses the legitimacy strategies of North Korean official culture in the light of perceived internal needs for change, even as the foundations of the traditional personality cult remain intact and strengthened by the Band’s performances. Analysis of musical performances online and relevant comparative literature on North Korean music form the core of the article. Finally, the article shows the arc from the Band as an innovative symbol of possible liberalization into a far more conservative implement as time…

Kimon a Siracusa. Spunti di riflessione sull’attività, lo stile e le opere minori dell’incisore

2014

Kimon's output boasts numerous studios, though the minor nominals are often been excluded from scientific analysis in favor of the major ones. This contribution is dedicated to these «minor» works (in particular silver hemidracmae and bronze hemilitra) listed in the catalogue. Despite the presence of Cimon's signature, they appear distance itself from the rest of its production. By analyzing their style and using comparisons with the larger dies by Kimon himself and other engravers, the author offers new ideas for reflections and questions regarding the engraver's professional activity and procedures of production practiced between the various Syracusan ateliers of the end of the V-beginnin…
